What is Studio Photography?

Studio photography takes place in a controlled indoor environment — a dedicated photography studio with permanent lighting setups, backdrops, and equipment. The studio is fully controlled: no weather concerns, no distractions, consistent lighting every time.

Studio photography is ideal when you need extreme consistency (product photography for a catalog, for example), or when a completely clean, distraction-free background is essential to the shot.

What is On-Location Photography?

On-location photography happens wherever you are — your office, your home, a restaurant, a park, a rooftop, a warehouse. The photographer brings professional equipment to your environment and creates studio-quality images in your actual space.

Why On-Location Usually Wins

Convenience. No travel, no parking, no building to find. Your session happens at your own office or a location you already know. For busy professionals in downtown Chicago or the suburbs, this saves real time.

Context. Photos taken in your actual environment often feel more authentic and relevant to your brand. An executive photographed in their own office conveys authority and ownership in a way a generic studio backdrop cannot.

Team shoots. If you need headshots for 20 or 200 employees, bringing a photographer to your office eliminates the logistical nightmare of getting your entire team to an external studio. We've photographed teams as large as 62 people in a single day at a client's Chicago office.

Flexibility. On-location means you're not limited to a small set of backdrops. We can shoot against your office lobby, a textured wall, an outdoor courtyard, or a classic white background — all in the same session.

When a Studio Might Be Better

If you need a very specific, highly controlled look — such as perfectly white backgrounds for e-commerce product listings, or extremely consistent lighting across a very large volume of similar shots — a dedicated studio can be the right call. We also offer studio sessions at our Lisle location for clients who prefer the traditional studio experience.
