Best Locations for Outdoor Portraits Near Chicago

The Chicagoland area has no shortage of beautiful settings for outdoor portrait photography. Whether you want the energy of the city, the open space of a nature preserve, or the classic charm of a suburban park, there's a perfect location within easy reach. Here are Gaby's favorite spots — places where lighting, scenery, and logistics all come together beautifully.

Downtown Chicago

Chicago's architecture provides a world-class backdrop. The streets of the Loop, the Riverwalk, Millennium Park, and the lakefront offer everything from dramatic skyline shots to intimate urban portraits. The city works especially well for fashion, personal branding, and editorial-style sessions. Golden hour — about an hour before sunset — turns Chicago's glass towers into glowing amber backdrops that are simply stunning.

Practical note: popular public spaces in Chicago are generally permit-free for small personal shoots, but commercial shoots may require a permit from the Chicago Film Office. We navigate this for you.

Morton Arboretum — Lisle, IL

Just a few minutes from our Lisle studio, the Morton Arboretum is one of the most beautiful outdoor portrait locations in the western suburbs. Depending on the season you get flowering trees in spring, lush green paths in summer, spectacular color in fall, or stark beautiful structures in winter. The variety of environments within a single location is exceptional. Photography is permitted with a day pass; commercial shoots require a permit.

Naperville Riverwalk

The Naperville Riverwalk along the DuPage River is a perennial favorite for suburban portrait sessions. The combination of water, bridges, green space, and seasonal plantings gives you multiple looks within a short walk. It works beautifully for family portraits, senior sessions, and personal branding shots that need a warm, inviting feel.

Cantigny Park — Wheaton, IL

Cantigny's formal gardens and open lawns provide a classic, elegant setting perfect for family portraits, engagement sessions, or any shoot where you want a timeless feel. The grounds are beautifully maintained year-round. Photography passes are available at the gate.

Your Own Backyard or Neighborhood

Don't underestimate the power of a familiar, personal location. Some of our favorite portrait sessions happen in clients' own backyards, on their front porch, or in a neighborhood park a few blocks from home — especially for family portraits and children's photography. There's a genuine ease and comfort that comes through in images taken in a space people love.

Best Times for Outdoor Sessions

Golden hour (one hour after sunrise or one hour before sunset) consistently produces the most flattering light — warm, directional, and soft. For practical reasons most clients prefer the evening golden hour. Overcast days are actually ideal for portraits because clouds act as a giant natural softbox, eliminating harsh shadows. Avoid midday in direct sun — it creates unflattering shadows and causes squinting.
